Puy de Sancy

Highlight • Summit

Because its 1,886 meters of altitude project it onto the roof of Auvergne, the Puy de Sancy is considered the king of the Monts Dore.

300,000 years old when its neighbors in Cantal are 20 million years old, this stratovolcano has experienced relentless erosion. As a result, its flanks are notched and the circuses that surround it overflow with majesty. On the neighboring ridges, you can make out jagged rocks in the middle of grassy slopes.

Finally, when the sky is proudly clear, Mont Blanc stands out in the distance...

After its tough ascent, take the time to get drunk on this geological giant.

A decent hike up Puy de Dome, the highest peak in the Monts Dome area of Auvergne at 1,465 Straight up from the car park up to the top and down the other side to do a bit of a loop. Note: Ample car park at the start but get there early on weekends or in season.

The path to the crater's interior remains closed. A large information sign explains the problems of erosion and demonstrates the difficulty of restoring the path.

It's better to go up via Ceyssat and come back down via Orcines. The climb still hurts but there's less traffic and the descent is worth it 😉

Temple construction in the 2nd century on the summit of the Puy de Dôme. The Temple of Mercury, built on the summit of the Puy de Dôme, was one of the largest mountain sanctuaries in Roman Gaul. It could be seen from a great distance, including from the city of Augustonemetum, present-day Clermont-Ferrand. The Via Agrippa, a highway from Lyon, the capital of Gaul, to Saintes on the Atlantic, allowed travelers to reach the shrine via the pilgrimage center at the Col de Ceyssat.
