Tips from the Community

Olivier
September 19, 2026, Pont de l’Union à Palavas

The Pont de l'Union crosses the Lez in the heart of Palavas-les-Flots and connects the two historic banks of the village. Its history is part of the history of travel in Palavas: before the construction of modern bridges, a ferry notably ensured the crossing of the Lez and was used by both residents and summer visitors until 1965. The Pont de l'Union thus replaced one of the last ferry links between the two banks. Since the structure, the quays and fishing boats recall that Palavas first developed as a fishing village established at the mouth of the Lez.

From the place called Le Pilou to the eponymous footbridge, this path takes us to the heart of the lagoon landscape of the Arnel pond. A space where human developments rub shoulders with the characteristic environments of the Palavas ponds: lagoon, sansouire and halophytic vegetation. Arnel is today a protected natural area, integrated into the Natura 2000 network and the classified site of the Palavas ponds. But the lagoon also bears the traces of a long history of exploitation: fishing, old salt pans and hydraulic structures have shaped this amphibious territory for several centuries.

It borders the Lez river and is located in the immediate vicinity of the protected natural site of Méjean (Natura 2000 reserve), ideal for observing pink flamingos and local wildlife.

The Lez cycle path (often called the Voie Verte du Lez) is one of the most famous cycle routes in the region. It allows you to connect the center of Montpellier to the sea (Palavas-les-Flots) in complete safety, away from cars.

Designed by the famous architects Jean Nouvel and François Fontès. It presents itself as an imposing blue and black parallelepiped, open to the outside and integrating sustainability criteria.

Please note that ... from June to August access is subject to a fee! (Only if you arrive via the main entrance). Whether you are on a bike or on foot, for a short trip to Ste Croix, you will have to pay 5 euros to pass ... (even if you don't swim, don't go to the "guinguette", etc ...). In short ... prefer another nearby passage, or come back off-season.
