The Isère simply, without artifice, nature. When we are in Saint Bonnet de Chavagne we do this loop every day at 11 am, it's our aperitif. Sometimes we extend it at the start by going through Saint Antoine l'Abbaye. Sometimes we extend it on the way back by going south of the Château de l'Artaudière towards the walnut groves of Chatte (Saint Marcelin). Pure happiness, fit for the rest of the day! Wherever we go, the bikes are in the car, and we thus cycle loops of 20 to 60 km daily. And a book always accompanies us, what a joy to stop and read a little in front of a remarkable landscape. Long live bike loops! Daniel

The FRANCE VOYAGE website reports on the origin of the current place name with Saint DONATUS: "With the advent of Christianity, Saint-Donat bore the name Jovincieu or Jovenzieux. In 732, during the invasion of the Saracens, Corbus, the bishop of Grenoble, fled to Jovenzieux and brought with him the relics of Saint Donatus, who died in the 6th century, on his way to Sisteron – hence the name Saint-Donat." However, the collegiate church located in the town has a different patron saint than the place name; here, the choice was made for the two prince of the apostles, SAINTS PIERRE et PAUL, whose common feast day is celebrated on June 29th in the calendar.

April 1879. Ferdinand Cheval, then a 43-year-old rural postman, stumbled upon a stone so bizarre during his rounds that it sparked a dream. A true autodidact, he dedicated 33 years of his life to building a dream palace in his vegetable garden, inspired by nature, postcards, and the first illustrated magazines he distributed. For his rounds in the countryside, he traveled about 30 kilometers each day, collecting stones with the help of his trusty wheelbarrow. Alone, misunderstood, he inscribed "the work of a man" on his monument. His dream palace was completed in 1912.

Unique in the world, the Palais Idéal has inspired artists for over a century. Independent of any artistic movement, built without any architectural rules, the Palais Idéal was admired by the Surrealists. In 1969, it was classified as a Historic Monument by André Malraux, then Minister of Culture, as a work of naive art.
