The oyster port of Arès (Port Ostréicole d’Arès) is located on the northern shore of the Arcachon Basin and is considered one of the most authentic, quietest, and picturesque ports in the entire region. While other ports in the basin are heavily overrun by tourists, Arès has retained the pristine charm of a real workplace. Key information and highlights of the port: A real workplace (Site de Travail) The fleet: Around 30 professional oyster farmers and 10 professional fishermen are active in the port, jointly operating a fleet of about 70 boats (the typical flat "Chaland" boats). The huts: The port structure is characterized by a series of about 30 colorful (blue, yellow, green) wooden huts. In these huts, the farmers store their tools, clean the freshly harvested oysters, and prepare the limewashed roof tiles to which the oyster larvae attach in the breeding parks. Gastronomy and experiences Oyster tasting: In many of the traditional huts (Cabanes), you can enjoy fresh oysters, seafood platters, and a glass of chilled Bordeaux white wine right by the water. Fishing tourism: Some oyster farmers offer visitors the opportunity to join them on the boat to experience the work amidst the tidal pools up close. Art on Thursdays: On Thursday evenings in summer, local artists set up their easels at the port and present their works in the open air. The Oyster Festival: Every year in summer, the traditional, multi-day Oyster Festival (Fête de l’Huître) takes place here – a huge event with brass bands, long tables, and dancing late into the night. Nature and local landmarks La Femme Océane: Right at the port stands this striking wooden sculpture by artist Dominique Pios, symbolizing women and water, offering a great view over the port basin. The nature reserve: The port directly borders the protected salt marsh nature reserve (Prés Salés d’Arès et de Lège). An ideal parking area is also located at the port to start the hiking trails for bird and lizard watching.
