Town Hall

The Bayeux Episcopal Palace or Bayeux Bishop's Palace is an episcopal palace located in Bayeux, France. It is the place of residence of the bishops of Bayeux before 1793. It is currently occupied by the town hall of Bayeux and the Baron-Gérard museum.
It should not be confused with the Hôtel du Doyen, used as an episcopal palace during the Concordat.

History: before 1793
The palace is built to the north of the cathedral. It was part of the canonical complex which housed the cathedral, the bishop's residence, the canonical cloister, the chapter house, the library and the officialdom.
It was limited:
to the east by the city walls and the factory houses (current rue Larcher);
to the west the chapter room and the salt granary (rue du Bienvenu);
to the north, a fortified gate on Rue de la Chaîne;
to the southeast, the Saint-Étienne chapel and the Saint-Vigoret gate.
The octagonal chapel built was built at the beginning of the 16th century under the episcopate of Louis de Canossa (1516 – 1531).
The palace was rebuilt in 1770-71.

Since 1793:
At the instigation of Gabriel Moisson de Vaux, member of the district of Bayeux, on March 30, 1797, a plane tree was planted as a tree of liberty in the courtyard of the palace (currently Place de la Liberté). It is one of the oldest in France. On December 13, 1932, it was classified among the sites as a remarkable natural monument. In October 2000, it obtained the “Remarkable Tree of France” label.
In the 19th century, the former bishopric was partly assigned to the district court and the chapel served as a deliberation room. The Saint-Regnobert room which connected the north transept of the cathedral to the bishopric was destroyed to open the Flachat passage.
In 1833, one of the wings was destroyed, then rebuilt to serve as a remand prison.
In 1900, the Baron Gérard museum was transferred to the oldest wing of the palace. From 2001 to 2013, the museum was closed to allow restoration work (particularly on the chapel) and expansion. The district court, closed on December 31, 2009, is included in the new museum trail.

From the outside, the building gives little - inside is absolute ban on photography. An absolute must when in Bayeux. People who are less interested in history - may not quite understand this - but I thought it was just fantastic as history was depicted pictorially!

Nowadays, very few mills are still in operation in their original function, but they appear to hikers and cyclists along the river as technical and historical monuments of an ancient craft tradition: solely through human ingenuity and the natural power of flowing water as driving energy, the heavy millstones inside were moved and thus, for example, grain kernels could be ground into flour (so-called grain mills) or oil could be pressed from fruits (e.g. olives) (so-called oil mills).
