Rivers and canals crisscross the country, with the latter being a very essential part of the transport infrastructure in earlier times. Later, first the railway and then, even later, lorries took over the task of transporting goods. In the competition between the different modes of transport, they were fast and inexpensive compared to barges – and therefore more efficient. When building the artificial waterways, however, it had to be taken into account that differences in height always had to be overcome, and so – at greater or lesser intervals, depending on the local situation – locks often line the canals.
