You are here in the heart of the ancient castrum of Montblanc. The church of Sainte-Eulalie preserves parts dating back to the Middle Ages, notably an apse whose bases could date from the end of the 11th century. Over the centuries, it was enlarged and fortified: its machicolations and its high bell tower recall that in the Middle Ages, the church also participated in the defense of the village. Right next to it stands the castle tower, the only visible remnant of the former feudal castle. The ensemble formed the fortified heart of Montblanc, itself protected by several enclosures whose layout is still perceptible in the organization of the old village. But the history of the place does not begin in the Middle Ages. Excavations carried out around the church in 2011 revealed vestiges of an occupation dating from the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. The site has thus crossed nearly two millennia of history, from ancient occupation to the medieval castral village and then to the current town.

The medieval fort (La Forcia) dates from the 12th century. It was built on a Carolingian necropolis, which was destroyed during the construction of the tower and its moats. The fort was abandoned around 1250. Built on a hill about 100 meters high, the tower offers a 360° panoramic view. After the abandonment of the medieval fortification, the site experienced a second life in 1845: the walls of the medieval building in Valros, which had served as a stone quarry after its decommissioning, were reused for the construction of a Chappe telegraph relay station in 1845. This installation was part of Claude Chappe's national optical telegraph network, the first large-scale telecommunications network. The Chappe Tower was a relay station equipped with a mast topped by articulated arms (the semaphore) whose coded position allowed visual messages to be transmitted to the next station, one after the other. This activity ceased in the 1840s with the arrival of the electric telegraph.

The first known mentions of this church come from four documents from the 12th and 13th centuries. The nave, a Romanesque, strictly quadrangular structure, was first built in the 11th century. In the 12th century the choir was built in the form of a hemisphere. The church is connected to a fortification that stretches around the square of the "Château Vieux" (Old Castle). During the 12th and 13th centuries, the municipality had the "Tour de l'église" (church tower, bell tower) built. This allowed sentries from a height of 35 meters to monitor the arrival of looters. This also explains the machicolations and battlements on the outer wall. The most remarkable things inside the church are the wooden pulpit from 1730 and the imposing altar.
