The founding of the Parish of Rupt sur Moselle probably dates back to the 7th century after the establishment of a monastery at the summit of the Saint Mont. At this time, a chapel was built on the site of the current church, under the name of “Parrochaige de Sainct Estene de Lonchamp”; this religious building, with the walled cemetery, was to serve as a refuge in the event of an attack, the inhabitants gathered there to take into account the seigniorial decisions. But it was in 1738 that the first church in Rupt sur Moselle was built. But, in the middle of the last century, having become too small to accommodate the parishioners, it was decided to enlarge it in 1846 (Rupt sur Moselle had 4,390 inhabitants). The old church had 360 m², the one that was built, therefore the current one, has 927 m². It was decided, at this time, to demolish the choir and the nave dating from the 18th century, but the bell tower and its base will be preserved; this part of the building affirms the historical value of the church; a precision which deserves to be noted. https://ruptsurmoselle.fr/culture-loisirs/patrimoine-culturel/eglise-saint-etienne/

The Croix de Parier is a memorial to the victims of the First World War in Rupt-sur-Moselle. The climb is worth it just for the beautiful view over the Moselle valley.
