October 8, 2026, Forest Loop Walk

The Forest Loop Walk is a gentle circuit track passing through the highly biodiverse Black Mountain Nature Reserve. This well-maintained unsealed track meanders through a thick canopy of stringybark and box gum trees that make up this dry sclerophyll forest that is home to over 500 species of native plants and a vibrant array of birdlife. Black Mountain Nature Reserve launched new interpretative flora signs along the track in 2026.

Tidbinbilla is one of those places where the wildlife often steals the show. Kangaroos graze beside the trails, emus wander through the grasslands, and with a bit of patience, you might even spot a platypus or koala. The reserve also plays an important role in protecting several of Australia's threatened native species.

The climb to Gibraltar Peak passes through grassland and forest before reaching one of the best viewpoints in Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve. Along the way, interpretive signs share stories of the landscape and its wildlife, while also explaining the peak's deep cultural significance to the Ngunnawal people.

Square Rock is really more a collection of large granite boulders at this summit. There is a step ladder here leading you to a great lookout from the top of the rocks.
