The church of Ste Honorine in the turmoil of the conflict of the wars of religion. Violence against Catholic parish churches has been rife in the Bocage since 1562, according to local historians. Two places are usually cited: the church of Ste Honorine la Chardonne and that of Ronfeugerai, places where there are many followers of the new reform. For almost a year, Catholic service there was interrupted. The two priests (Mr Pigeon and Mr Halley) threatened with death, had to flee to avoid being killed like the priests of Clécy and Villers. On Ste Honorine, the rivalry of the lords of La Poupelière (Payen) and St Sauveur (De Grésille) will exacerbate these tensions. We find this rivalry at the nerve center of the village: the Church. In the transept, the north chapel was built by the de Grésille (St Sauveur) while the south chapel was built by the Payen (la Poupelière). We also find outside the church the old keystone bearing the Payen arms as well as the tombstones of the De Grésille. To go further on this rivalry between these two lords at this time, discover the stories present on the circuit sites concerning “La Poupelière” and St Sauveur”.

This castle is not one of the many places of memory of Protestantism in the Bocage. The “De Grésille” will remain Catholic. However, the existing rivalry between the two lordly families “Payen” of the Château de La Poupelière and “De Grésille” of the Château de St Sauveur, concerning the supremacy of Ste Honorine la Chardonne, fueled the conflicts and pillaging during the religious wars of the Bocage. To go further: How did Nicolas de Grésille end up in prison in Avranches in 1566 following the looting of the castle of St Sauveur ordered by Guillaume Payen? https://1drv.ms/b/s!AvZwDDO2nEl-gSKo6J3jG1hKRgP7?e=jKF7Ty
