The Catholic parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Andermatt is the most important church in the Ursern Valley and is one of the most important places of worship in the canton of Uri. The parish church of St. Peter and Paul replaced the church of St. Kolumban as the parish church in 1606, four years after it was built. St. Kolumban thus became the “valley church”. At the end of the 17th century, the local baroque architect Bartholomäus Schmid expanded the parish church of St. Peter and Paul. It reflects his style and is magnificently developed on the inside. The magnificent main altar is the work of the famous Valais sculptor Johannes Ritz. The baroque chapel of St. Michael was built in 1640 as an ossuary. Source: andermatt.ch
