Sils Maria is a historic village in the Engadine, known for its connection to Friedrich Nietzsche and its cultural significance. In the beautiful Engadine village of Sils, at 1802 meters above sea level, everything is a little more intense: the tranquility, the changing seasons, the light, nature – happiness. Vacationers who found St. Moritz too hectic continued on to Sils Maria. That's how it was a hundred years ago; and that's how it still is today. It's palpable at every turn: those who come to Sils want to nourish their souls. And in doing so, they want to experience the warmth of a small village with around 810 inhabitants, where tourism has a long tradition and has been a way of life for over 100 years. Two Hearts, One Soul Sils Maria and Sils Baselgia: Our village has two names because it comprises two settlements. Sils Baselgia grew up around the Church of San Lurench. It was first mentioned in 1356 and still stands today. "Baselgia" is derived from basilica (church). In Sils Maria, the larger of the two villages, the large dairy farm once stood. The name "Maria" refers not to a proper name, but to the term "dairy farm." "Sils" means something like "green meadow" or "long strip of land." This also referred to the Sils lake plain. It is still a "green meadow"—thanks to landscape and nature conservation efforts and the awareness of these values that the people of Sils possess. Located at 2,450 m above sea level, on a spectacular natural balcony overlooking the upper Valmalenco, with a direct view of Monte Disgrazia, the Italian-Swiss ridge, and many high peaks of the Rhaetian Alps. Reaching the refuge is a hike of medium difficulty: from the village of Chiareggio, it takes about 2.5 hours to climb (850 m of elevation gain), while from San Giuseppe it is slightly longer but with gentler gradients. The trail is well marked and offers increasingly expansive views as you ascend. Excellent cuisine featuring typical Valtellina dishes.

Lake Pirola is a picturesque artificial lake accessible from the Gerli-Porro Refuge along a trail that crosses scree slopes and stretches where the trail merges with the rocks (markings are present but not always visible; be careful). The lake is surrounded by Alpine scenery and can be skirted along a scenic trail.

Above Val Ventina, in the upper Val Malenco, Lake Pirola seems almost hidden among screes and small cliffs. Surrounded by some peaks of about 2,400 meters above sea level, this small wedge-shaped body of water is not far from the Tartaglione Crispo refuge.
