The paradise of the Costa Brava — Trail Running from Girona to Llançà
Catalunya Trail — Bikepacking in the Pyrenees
Hape Kerkeling, a well-known entertainer in the German-speaking world, wrote down some thoughts about a mystical experience (encounter with God) while traveling through Spain, which I would also like to offer to the viewer of this small sacred monument on the Matagalls: "To encounter God, one must first extend an invitation to him, for he will not come uninvited. It is also a form of good manners. We have free choice. He builds an individual relationship with each person. Only someone who truly loves is capable of this." (Hape Kerkeling in "Ich bin dann mal weg")

Nice bridge to cross the river La Muga by bike or on foot. When you cross the bridge by bike you might think it will collapse anytime soon because the planks make a lot of noise. Passed it three times last week and nothing happened 😅

Look at the windows! They contrast beautifully with the stone walls... and the wooden door is also worth a look!

⛪ Santa Maria de Porqueres – A Romanesque Jewel by Lake Banyoles Perched on a gentle hill on the eastern shore of Lake Banyoles, the Església de Santa Maria de Porqueres is one of Catalonia's finest examples of 12th-century Romanesque architecture. Consecrated in 1182, this single-nave church features a semicircular apse, barrel vault, and intricately sculpted capitals that depict biblical scenes and symbolic motifs. Its façade is adorned with a striking portal, distinguished by 22 carved medallions and a series of arches, making it a standout among Romanesque churches. The church's serene setting, surrounded by cypress trees and overlooking the tranquil waters of the lake, offers a peaceful retreat for visitors. Adjacent to the church stands a comunidor, a small open-sided structure historically used by priests to bless the surrounding lands and protect them from storms. Tip: Easily accessible via cycling routes around Lake Banyoles, this historic site is a perfect stop for those interested in architecture, history, or seeking a moment of reflection amidst nature.

Girona offers a vast network of running routes, with over 3,900 trails available on komoot. These range from easy city runs to challenging mountain trails, catering to all fitness levels.
Girona's running trails feature incredibly diverse terrain. You can find everything from the lush forests and rolling hills of the Gavarres Massif, to repurposed railway lines known as Greenways, and stunning coastal paths along the Costa Brava. More challenging alpine loops are also available in the nearby Pyrenees.
Yes, Girona has several options suitable for families. The Greenways, such as sections of the Carrilet Greenway, offer flat and accessible paths away from traffic. For a scenic and moderately challenging option, consider the Puig Clarà and Lake Banyoles Viewpoint Trail, which combines a flat lakeside run with a gentle climb.
Many natural areas and Greenways in Girona are dog-friendly, but it's always best to check local regulations for specific trails, especially within natural parks. Generally, dogs on a leash are welcome on most paths. The Humedales de la Rubina desde Empuriabrava route, for example, offers a pleasant circular run through a natural park that is often suitable for dogs.
Girona's routes offer many scenic highlights. You can run along the historic Cap de Creus Lighthouse, explore the unique volcanic landscape of the Garrotxa Volcanic Zone Natural Park on the Fageda d'en Jordà, Santa Margarida, and Croscat Volcanoes Trail, or enjoy views of Lake Banyoles. The Aiguamolls de l'Empordà Natural Park also provides beautiful wetland scenery.
Yes, many running routes in Girona are circular, allowing you to start and finish at the same point. For instance, the Camí de Ronda: L'Escala to Empúries Loop offers coastal views on a circular path. Another option is the challenging Puigsacalm and Puig dels Llops circular trail run for experienced trail runners.
Girona's mild climate generally allows for year-round outdoor activity. Spring and autumn offer particularly pleasant temperatures for running, with less heat than summer and milder conditions than winter. However, the diverse landscapes mean you can find suitable routes in any season, from coastal paths in cooler months to shaded forest trails in summer.
The running routes in Girona are highly rated by the komoot community, with an average score of 4.4 stars from over 1,400 reviews. Runners often praise the incredible variety of landscapes, from stunning coastal views to tranquil forest paths, and the well-maintained network of trails that cater to all abilities.
Absolutely. Girona is a popular training base for professional athletes due to its access to challenging terrain. The Gavarres Massif offers numerous trails with significant elevation, and for truly strenuous mountain ascents, the nearby Pyrenees provide routes like the Bastiments y Pic de la Dona circular trail run, which features substantial climbs.
While not explicitly jogging trails, Girona's well-preserved medieval old town (Barri Vell) and its ancient city walls offer unique urban running experiences with historical scenery. For a route that combines natural beauty with historical exploration, consider the Castillo de Montgrí trail run, which takes you past a historic castle.
Many of Girona's Greenways and city parks are easily accessible by public transport, particularly within and around the city. For routes further afield, such as those in the Pyrenees or more remote coastal areas, you might need to combine public transport with a short taxi ride or consider driving. The Carrilet Greenway, for example, connects several towns, making sections accessible by local buses.
Yes, Girona's proximity to the Costa Brava means you can enjoy stunning coastal running paths. The Camí de Ronda is a famous network of coastal trails. A great option is the From Tossa de Mar to Cala Pola route, which offers breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea and passes through charming coves.
