Rest stop at the end of the Cedec Valley at the foot of Gran Zebrù, Cevedale, and Pizzo Tresero. An initial refuge, destroyed during the Great War, was rebuilt in 1926 and dedicated to the memory of Luigi E. Pizzini, a renowned Milanese mountaineer. Renewed and renovated in 1982 thanks to the legacy of Mrs. Mayr Frattola, it took the new name "Pizzini-Frattola" in memory of Alpine General Carlo Frattola and his son Augusto, who died on the Cima Grande di Lavaredo.

Beautiful route of about 600 meters of positive difference in altitude between the 1950 meters of the Piana di Preda Rossa up to the 2560 meters of the Rifugio Cesare Ponti. The high mountain environment is enriched by the beauty of the Preda Rossa valley, by its milky and slow torrent, by the frame of the Corni Bruciati, up to the majestic mass of the Disgrazia, which dominates and watches over the path. An enchanting place!

For experienced mountaineers seeking a significant challenge, the Cesare Ponti Hut – Monte Disgrazia (3,678 m) loop from Parcheggio Preda Rossa is a demanding 16.3 km path involving a substantial ascent to an iconic peak. Another notable route is the Rifugio Pizzini-Frattola – Gran Zebrù Summit loop from Rifugio Pizzini-Frattola, which takes you through high-altitude alpine landscapes to the summit.

The region around Sondrio is rich in natural beauty. Many routes offer views of towering peaks, glaciers, and pristine valleys. The best time for mountaineering in Sondrio is typically during the summer months, from late June to early September, when the high-altitude trails are generally free of snow and weather conditions are more stable. While popular routes can see more traffic, exploring areas within the Orobie Valtellinesi Park or seeking out less-known trails in Valmalenco can offer a more secluded experience. The vastness of the region, including parts of Stelvio National Park, means that it's often possible to find quieter paths away from the main hubs, especially on weekdays.
For families looking for less strenuous options, the region offers numerous hiking and trekking trails that are more accessible than full-scale mountaineering. While dedicated 'family mountaineering' routes are rare due to the sport's inherent difficulty, some moderate hikes in areas like Val di Mello or along the Sentiero Valtellina provide beautiful scenery and a taste of the mountains without extreme technical demands.
When mountaineering in Sondrio, especially within protected areas like Stelvio National Park or Orobie Valtellinesi Park, it's crucial to be aware of regulations. These can include restrictions on camping, waste disposal, and sometimes access to certain sensitive areas. While specific permits for general mountaineering are not always required, it's always best to check with local park authorities or mountain hut operators for the latest guidelines before embarking on your trip.
