Tigani was recognized as a rural municipality in 1918 (Kinotita Tiganiou Koinotha Teganonio), renamed Pythagorio in 1955[2] and elevated to the status of a city municipality (dimos) in 1989. Through the merger with ten rural municipalities existing since 1918 following the 1997 municipal reform, Pythagorio became the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name.
