The history of the clay pit in Alpenrod is closely linked to the historical mining of kaolin (porcelain clay) in the Westerwald. Here are the most important stages: + Origin and heyday (until mid-20th century): For decades, kaolin was mined in the historical pit named "Böhmsfund". This mineral is particularly light and fine, making it an indispensable raw material for the production of porcelain and ceramics. + Formation of the clay pit pond: After mining ceased, the old pit filled with groundwater. Due to the special clay layers at the bottom, the water shimmers a distinctive turquoise-green. The pond is now used by the fishing club ASV Lochum-Alpenrod and is known, among other things, as "Salitos-See". + Resumption (1995): The company Stephan Schmidt took over the area and resumed open-cast clay mining in the immediate vicinity to further develop the deposits over an area of approx. 8 hectares. + Present: Today, right next to the picturesque clay pit pond, there is still an active pit where clay is continuously extracted.
